June 23rd is National Pink Flamingo Day!
Did you know National Pink Flamingo Day is an actual holiday? It started in 2007 to honor Don Featherstone, the creator of the iconic plastic lawn flamingo.
Displaying a lawn flamingo at your home has become one of the most common ways to celebrate all things Florida kitsch.
We’ve compiled a list of ways that you can celebrate the day and honor the birds that inspired the yard ornament!
Next time your travels take you to the Southernmost Point in the USA, head over to The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory to meet Rhett & Scarlett, Key West’s most famous celebrity couple. A maximum of six guests per day can “flamingle” with Rhett & Scarlett after hours. Just contact Clarisa Fluker at email@example.com to reserve your spot!
Due to COVID-19, the Conservatory has adjusted hours from 9 am to 4:30 pm daily.
Nowhere near the Florida Keys? You can watch Rhett & Scarlett LIVE quite often on the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory Facebook page. We also like to share their posts or do LIVE Watch Parties on our Authentic Florida Facebook page. So be sure to follow us on Facebook.
Flamingos, Flamingo Gardens in Davie
If you’re in the Broward County area you can visit Flamingo Gardens in Davie, a botanical garden and Everglades wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary provides residence to permanently injured and non-releasable birds and animals, including flamingos, of course! Flamingo Gardens is open Monday through Sunday 10am to 5pm … with the last entry at 4pm. Make sure to reserve your tickets online ahead of time due to COVID-19.
If you’d like to stay indoors or have young kids at home looking for something to do, look no further! Flamingo Gardens has released a wealth of online learning entitled “Explore Outdoors While Indoors”.
- Your kids can enjoy the A to Z Learning Tour of the gardens, targeted for Pre-K to 2nd grade, but loved by all ages! Each letter focuses on wildlife and plants of the garden with videos, photos, fun facts, virtual tours and craft projects! You can access the learning here.
- Another great option is the indoor scavenger hunt led by Ms.Kathy, Nature Detective, and Chester the Scavenger in search of hidden gems to build an Everglades diorama at home! Check out the scavenger hunt and supply list for the Everglades Ecosystem Diorama here.
- You can also enjoy a quick seven-minute video from PBS with the KidVision VPK kids as they take a tram ride into Flamingo Gardens and discover the plants, birds and wildlife of native Florida! You can watch the video here.
Feeding the Flamingos, Sarasota Jungle Gardens
In the Sarasota area? Make sure to stop by Sarasota Jungle Gardens, home to more than 200 native and exotic animals, including flamingos, of course! They free-roam throughout the park and often greet guests personally, sometimes face to face. You may hand-feed them or just view them strolling by!
Due to COVID-19, Sarasota Jungle Gardens has limited hours, Thursday – Sunday from 10am to 3:30pm.
In Bonita Springs you will find the Everglades Wonder Gardens, home to rescued birds and reptiles! Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Everglades Wonder Gardens is temporarily closed, but don’t worry! You can still see Amigo the Flamingo and the rest of the flamboyance (a flock of flamingos) as they feed, preen and explore the flamingo lagoon. Make sure to check in around 8am and 4pm to catch their feeding times! You can watch the FlamCam here as well as take a virtual tour of the gardens here.
