May is the month when spring flowers are in bloom and an ideal time to create some fresh Florida arrangements for mom.

And the best news of all – picking your own flowers while enjoying the outdoors is totally FREE. And you know what they say, “the best things in life are free” and it’s so true when it comes to fresh flowers.

There is no need to buy flower arrangements and you don’t need to make that last minute call to a florist.

It’s easy and fun to create your own homemade arrangement. All you need is a little imagination, a vase, a pair of scissors and some flowers. The flowers do all the work and say, “I love you” in a very special way.

So where do you find flowers?

Start with your own backyard, or if you don’t have a back yard, go to a friend’s yard, or take a drive through the countryside, and look for flowers along the roadside. Some U-pick farms add a flowers to the spring crop, adding another option. It’s all about picking fresh.

You can keep it simple with one type of flower, create combination arrangements or keep the bouquet in one color or in different colors. The most important thing is to be creative and have fun – and that’s precisely where the love shines through.

Right now, flowers are blooming throughout Florida. Magnolias and gardenias are in bloom everywhere. Tropical flowers like bouganvillea and frangipani are blooming in South Florida, while azaleas and camellias are still blooming in Central and North Florida. Even if you don’t live in Florida, you’re sure to find local flowers in your area.

Here are some sample flower arrangements to get you started:
