There are many ways to describe Authentic Florida décor, but overall, it’s simple, vibrant, light, eclectic, elegant, funky and most importantly, reflective of the Florida environment. There are as many Authentic décor ideas as there are colors in the rainbow.
Let’s start with fun and funky. I like to get inspiration from “off the beaten path” shops. Probably, the most original one I have been to in ages is Ginny & Jane E’s on Anna Maria Island. Not only is it full of original treasures, art and artifacts, it’s a fabulous coffee and deli. The first time I went there – I spent 2 hours – randomly walking around the store looking at all the neat items…. gifts galore, decorated mailboxes with shells, tables, lamps, cards, endless shell creations and an abundant amount of funky memorabilia to adorn your Florida home.
Random Fun Ideas
I believe anything with local shells – done well – is wonderful – shells in a basket, shells on a counter, shells as center pieces. Nothing is more elegant than a simple sand dollar. I also have a collection of shark teeth scattered over my glass table which always starts a conversation with guests.
Recently, I bought a recycled wood table with cast iron legs – perfect for my home. And for my dining room table, I placed a fresh arrangement of calomondines in a glass vase. Very authentic Florida.
I also just purchased some brilliantly colored bathroom towels – bright green and chartreuse for the bathroom. Key West colors. They really added some vibrancy to the bath.
If you haven’t been to Elizabeth Rice’s shop on Main Street in Sarasota, you must. It’s a combination art gallery and a home décor shop – very unique – with Shell Art. I drool when I go there, as the large wall framed mirrors ($$$) are beautifully hand crafted with gorgeous shells. It’s worth the trip to see elegant shell art and beauty. Not all the shells come from Florida, but the artistry is worth the viewing.
