Make Your Own Authentic Florida Body Scrub

Last Updated on November 18, 2022

As Authentic Floridians, we spend a lot of time in the sun, the water, and the outdoors.  While enjoying all the amenities of Florida living, our body often needs skin nourishment, sloughing off the old while nourishing the new. Read on to check out how to make your own Authentic Florida body scrub!

To start the new year, we decided to create our own Authentic Florida body scrub. Exfoliating one’s skin and replenishing it with a refreshing citrus scrub is a great step towards rejuvenating yourself for the new year. Try this easy body scrub that takes only minutes to make, using just a few ingredients. It costs very little to make. It also makes lovely homemade gifts for friends.

Once a week (or more), we recommend using a body scrub after a full shower/bath using a spa hand mitt or loofah sponge, lightly applying and scrubbing the full body in a gentle, circular pattern.  Following the light scrub, rinse off.  The smell of the fresh scrub makes your body feel renewed and ready for a terrific day.

We make two kinds of body scrubs.  One is a white scrub using Epsom salts and fresh lemon, and the other is a sugar scrub using sugar and orange.

Florida Lemon Body Scrub

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 full cups of Epsom salt (found in any drug store and most grocery stores)
  • ⅔ cup of Sweet Almond Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores) or use an oil that is odorless (grapeseed, jojoba are others)
  • 15-20 dashes of essential lemon oil (found in bath shops or health food stores)
  • 1 lemon – zest the outside of the lemon with a hand zester (this is optional, but I like the fresh lemon smell)
  • Bowl for mixing
  • A plastic container that can be sealed

Instructions

  1. Pour the Epsom salt in the bowl.
  2. Add the Almond Oil.
  3. Put the dashes of lemon oil in the mixture and mix all ingredients.
  4. Zest the lemon and lightly mix in.
  5. Put in the container(s)

Notes

  • If you have any skin sensitivities (or have specific health conditions) I recommend you discuss with a health professional which oils might be better for your body (if at all).  I like Almond oil.  But there are others.
  • Also, your shower/bath will get oily from the scrub, so be careful to clean up the area to avoid any falls.
  • If you have any open wounds or sores, be careful of using citrus, as it could have a mild sting.
  • I don’t recommend using cooking oils for this recipe (vegetable oils).  It is recommended you use “cold-pressed” oils.
  • Florida Orange Body Scrub or Grapefruit Body Scrub

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup of white granulated sugar
    • 1 cup of light brown sugar
    • 2/3 cup of Sweet Almond Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores) or use an oil that is odorless (grapeseed, jojoba)
    • 1 orange – zest ½ the orange (or grapefruit), or more (this is optional, but I like the fresh citrus smell)
    • 15-20 dashes of Essential Orange Oil or Grapefruit Oil (found in bath shops or health food stores)
    • Bowl for mixing
    • A plastic container that can be sealed

    Instructions

    1. Pour the white and brown sugars in the bowl.
    2. Add the Almond Oil.
    3. Put the dashes of orange oil (or grapefruit) in the mixture and mix all ingredients.
    4. Zest the orange (or grapefruit) and lightly mix.
    5. Put in the container(s)

    Notes

It will not have a “sticky” consistency but will be a bit more “chunkier” than the Epson salt mixture.

Enjoy these wonderful homemade scrubs and enjoy the new you!   You can customize your very own concoction using fresh ingredients and essential oils. Enjoy experimenting with the recipes to create the perfect recipe for your new treat.
