Washington Oaks Gardens State Park: A Hidden Treasure

Last Updated on April 14, 2024

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park was once a plantation dating back to the early 1800s. It was named by a former owner who happened to be a distant relative of George Washington.

Extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Matanzas River just south of Marineland, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park preserves 425 acres of Florida’s original coastal scenery.

It’s the perfect place to take a serene stroll ANY day of the week, ANY time of the year (although we prefer to visit when it’s in the 60 – 80 degree range).

Although the formal gardens are the centerpiece of this park, Washington Oaks also includes the shoreline across A1A.

The shoreline of coquina rock formations that line its beach on the Atlantic Ocean is equally as stunning as the park.

Scenic, self-guiding trails lead park visitors along the marsh and through a maritime hammock.

Picnicking and fishing are also popular activities. A picnic area is located in a shady hammock south of the gardens.

Fishing areas are provided along the park’s seawall and west of the picnic area on the Matanzas River.

Many park visitors enjoy sunbathing, beachcombing, and bird watching.

It’s important to note that there are no formal swimming areas due to the coquina rock formations along the beach.

A portion of the hammock contains a formal garden with footpaths and reflecting ponds featuring many species of exotic plants from around the world.

The gardens are full of beautiful azaleas, camellias, and roses. It’s an incredible experience for the senses, so make sure you stop and smell the roses (every color).

If interested, you may join a Ranger on the First Friday of every month for a garden walk. You learn about the history of Washington Oaks while exploring the formal gardens.

The walk is approximately one hour and is part of the park entry fee. No registration is required.
NOTE: Participants meet in the Garden parking lot.

The ocean side gives visitors the opportunity to hike extensive coquina rock formations stretching along the Atlantic shoreline.

Although this isn’t a swimming beach because of the rocks, it’s a great place to find unique shells and spot a variety of shorebirds.

It’s also a great place to bring a beach chair, umbrella, and your favorite book.
