21+ Best Places to See Flamingos in Florida in 2024

Last Updated on April 10, 2024

Since we are all about flamingos to the point of it being somewhat of an obsession, we wanted to share the best places to see flamingos in Florida.

Flamingos in Florida

Once native to Florida, flamingos vanished from the Sunshine State in the early 20th century.

This was due to a number of factors including the popularity of hunting for their prized feathers. In addition, destruction of their wetland habitats for agriculture and urban development played a big part in their demise.

  1. Flamingos were probably Native to Florida. Captain George McCall tells about shooting and eating one at Fort Brooke, Tampa bay, in the 1830s.

    • I’ve heard the same, from different sources as well. One I recall was a news segment on a local station here in Tampa. I also recall reading somewhere that there were many accounts of early Spanish and English settlers that mentioned flamingos, some I believe were even in the 1800’s. Unfortunately, they were seen as nuisance birds and many were killed by the settlers and homesteaders here. The article mentioned there is now a nesting population in a storm water treatment area in southeast FL. It’s almost certain that they were/are native to at least the Central and South FL peninsula.

  2. Have visited all of these and really enjoyed seeing them!!!! We also saw flamingos at the Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg.
