The bottom line, no trip to Florida is complete without a visit to at least one of Florida’s unique attractions.
Now don’t get us wrong, we do understand the appeal of the big tourist attractions and amusement parks (we’re looking at you Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld Orlando & Busch Gardens), but nothing beats the quirky, independently owned attractions.

Stop #1: Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Where to Eat Near Weeki Wachee: Hernando Beach Tropical Grille
Located a short 15-minute drive from Weeki Wachee Springs, one of Florida’s unique attractions, Hernando Beach Tropical Grille is a relaxing outdoor eatery tucked away on a quiet canal that leads to the Gulf of Mexico.
This place exemplifies the total casual Florida experience. Here you can enjoy a leisurely afternoon relaxing with an adult beverage or noshing on fresh seafood (hello, Maine Lobster roll! — everything is made in-house with only the freshest ingredients!)
Owner Mike Peloquin, who hails from the North Shore of Boston, and his wife Cheryl, opened Hernando Beach Tropical Grille to fulfill his dream of bringing the nostalgia of his fond New England childhood memories to the Central West Florida coast.

Located in the heart of Brooksville in Florida’s Adventure Coast, Florida Maker’s Mercantile is a fun and creative boutique dedicated to supporting local Florida makers.

Stop #2: Dinosaur World
Where to Eat Near Dinosaur World, one of Florida’s Unique Attractions: Keel & Curley Winery at Keel Farms
Founded by John Keel in 1981, this 10-acre farm began as a plant nursery and then expanded to a blueberry farm.
In 2003, Keel & Curley Winery began when Mr. Keel decided to use his end-of-crop blueberries to make blueberry wine. The winery began that year with only 10 gallons of blueberry wine!
Eventually, the winery expanded to include Keel Farms Agrarian Ale+ Cider, brewing locally inspired craft beers and ciders.
In 2018, the business was taken over by John’s son, Clay Keel, and his wife, Carmen. Today, the farm spans over 35 acres and features produce, grass-fed cattle, a peach orchard, pasture-raised chickens, and of course, their signature blueberries!
The restaurant offers farm-to-table service in the tasting room and on its beautiful outdoor patio. The menu is handcrafted, made of only the freshest ingredients, and offers a wide variety of upscale and pub-style food to satisfy any palate or craving.

Where to Stay Near Dinosaur World: Strawberry House B&B
Located in the downtown Plant City historic district, the Strawberry House B&B is a beautiful Dutch Colonial Style Bed & Breakfast that dates back to 1910 close to one of Florida’s unique attractions.
The Strawberry House consists of five cozy suites, all themed & furnished with antiques and collectibles. Three of the suites have bathtubs and fireplaces.

Where to Shop Near Dinosaur World: Parkesdale Market
Parkesdale Market in Plant City, the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, has been family-owned and operated since 1969 and offers an eclectic mix of products.
Upon entering, you will see a walk-up area where you can order seasonal favorites such as strawberry shortcakes, ice cream swirls, and milkshakes.
Besides having a great selection of produce, the shop also features products such as plants, preserves, salsas, sauces, seasonings, pickled items, nut butters, pineberries, citrus gift baskets, souvenirs and lots more.

Where to Eat Near The Ringling Circus Museum, one of Florida’s Unique Attractions: Owen’s Fish Camp
Located in Burns Court in Downtown Sarasota, Owen’s Fish Camp prides itself on being “an ode to Old Florida Living”.
Fresh seafood is caught locally and brought in daily. They do not take reservations, so it sometimes can take a while to get seated.
However, you can relax under the shade of the historic Banyan Tree out front, which was gifted to Developer/Restauranteur Owen Burns by Thomas Edison!

Where to Stay Near The Ringling Circus Museum: The Reserve Retreat
The beautiful Reserve Retreat consists of three historically significant buildings, two of which were former homes of John Ringling, privately owned and occupied by the Ringling family until the mid-1920’s.
These two buildings were moved by mule when John Ringling built his famous grand estate, Ca’ d’Zan on Sarasota Bay in the mid-1920’s, to where they sit today on Tamiami Trail. The 3rd building was erected on site, and together, the three buildings served as a compound for housing and rehearsal space for circus performers until the 1940’s
Since then, the buildings have been repurposed into a Boarding House & Inn, Parker’s Court Camp, then later a photo studio.
A stay at The Reserve Retreat is a truly unique Florida experience.
- Hotel Hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- The Reserve Retreat, as we know it today, was started by longtime Sarasota resident, Jessica Simmons, who purchased the property due to her fascination with the history of the buildings and property
- Ms. Simmons spent a full year renovating The Retreat before opening in 2017.
- Since then, it has remained family owned and operated, with a focus on maintaining a culture rooted deeply in the beliefs of diversity, inclusion, equality, and pride
- The Retreat features six cozy rooms, each unique in atmosphere, all available for both short and long-term rental

Where to Shop Near The Ringling Circus Museum: Artful Giraffe
The Artful Giraffe is located in a historic bungalow in Downtown Sarasota, which just happens to have been one of a cluster built in the 1920’s by John Ringling as housing for circus performers!
The works of over 300 local artists are displayed and sold in the gallery.
This is THE place to find unique gifts for the art lover in your life. Here, you’ll find original works of fine art, prints, NFTS, apparel featuring the work of local artists, jewelry, pottery, wood art, and more.

- The first thing you may notice at The Artful Giraffe is that its posted hours of operation don’t exactly follow the status quo (that’s right … i.e., “ISH”). Stop #4: Solomon’s Castle, one of Florida’s Unique Attractions
Where to Eat at Solomon’s Castle: The Boat-in-the-Moat
The Boat-in-the-Moat restaurant is located on-site at Solomon’s Castle. It’s actually inside a “boat” built to house the eatery and the food is really delicious.
The Boat-in-the-Moat operates on the same schedule as the rest of Solomon’s Castle: Open October 1st – August 1st annually & closed during the months of August and September every year.
You can either dine inside the boat or outside shaded by oak trees adjacent to the boat. They have great salads and sandwiches.
You’ll be happy you made The Boat-in-the-Moat part of your day trip to Solomon’s Castle!

Where to Shop Near Solomon’s Castle: The Vintage Garden
The Vintage Garden is an adorable vintage and antique store located in Arcadia that specializes in romantic Victorian shabby cottage decor.
It’s known for having one-of-a-kind finds in furniture, art, clothing, jewelry, handbags, other accessories, home decor, and more.
The staff is very friendly and loves to meet new customers. Once you’ve been there, you’ll make it your go-to place whenever your travels bring you to Arcadia.
