Why Manatees Matter

Manatees, often affectionately known as “sea cows,” are vital to Florida’s natural heritage.

These gentle giants grace our waterways, bringing joy and wonder to those lucky enough to encounter them.

However, they face numerous challenges, including habitat loss, boat strikes, and environmental changes.

Graphic with DYK facts. Face text reads "Manatees are typically found in shallow coastal areas, springs and rivers where they feed on sea grass, mangrove leaves, and algae. These herbivores much on food for almost half the day, eating ten percent of their body weight in plant mass every day. With weights of up to 1,200 pounds, that is a whole lot of greenery!"

Their survival is intricately linked to the health of Florida’s ecosystems.
