Many people also refer to the house as the Captain’s House. Capt. James Bell, a river captain, built the house around 1877.

In 1901, according to information provided by the Amelia Island History Museum, Robert Downes bought the house and finished a couple of rooms inside.

The house remained in the Downes family until the death of the captain’s grandson in 1959.

Some motifs include sunbursts, fish scales, clovers, brackets, globes, scallops, circles, diamonds, and Maltese crosses.

We did a quick drive-by visit to the house in December 2021 and can tell the new owners have done wonders to it. Many of the original architectural details remain intact, including stained glass.

On March 2, 2019, the three-bedroom/three-bathroom, 2224-square-foot historic house hit the market for $750,000.

On September 8, 2019, the price was listed at $675,000. Although it needed a little TLC, it was an excellent investment for the right buyer. It sold on 2/20/20 for $640,000. You can check out all the details on Zillow.
