The Conch Republic Independence Celebration is a quirky Key West tradition that started in 1982. The US Border Patrol put up a roadblock on the road connecting the Florida Keys to the rest of the state.
What ensued included a trip to Federal Court, a battle that lasted approximately one minute, and some stale Cuban bread, amongst other things.
At the end of the good-humored act, the Conch Republic was born.
Below, we are sharing a bit about this interesting piece of Florida history, as well as its annual 10-day celebration in Key West.
History of the Conch Republic
In March of 1982, the US Border Patrol put up a roadblock on US-1 in Florida City. Everyone driving in and out of the Florida Keys was subjected to a customs search.
This roadblock caused a 17-mile traffic jam and outrage. US-based travelers were being treated as if they were traveling outside of the country.
National media coverage quickly spread the news about this roadblock.
The mayor of Key West, Dennis Wardlow, filed against this in Federal Court in Miami, though nothing was done.
When asked what he was going to do next, Mayor Wardlow said, “We are going to go home and secede.”
They surrendered, and the roadblock was later removed. This piece of history is celebrated annually during the Independence Celebration.
On April 23rd, 1982, The Conch Republic was established.
