Historic La Segunda Bakery Opens Third Location

Last Updated on March 12, 2022

Since 1915, the historic La Segunda Bakery & Café, has been a staple in Ybor City. It’s almost sacrilegious to visit the Tampa area and not swing by the historic bakery. Now, the family-owned business has opened a new St. Pete Cuban cafe.

The latest La Segunda Bakery & Café is located at 2436 Fourth St. N., in the Holiday Plaza. The grand opening date is March 22, 2022, but they have a soft opening happening now.

The 1,820-square-foot St. Pete Cuban café offers grab-and-go meals, indoor seating for 40 guests and a pet-friendly patio that can accommodate 28 customers.

It also offers many of the same menu items as its two Tampa locations, including made-to-order Cuban sandwiches, salads, cafe con leche, guava and cheese turnovers, quesitos, Italian cookies and flan.

“We really love this area of St. Petersburg,” said fourth-generation owner Copeland More. “It has a great mix of residential and office space, and it’s also very walkable.”

The original La Segunda Bakery is located at 2512 N. 15th St. in Ybor City. Founded by Juan More, it’s the world’s largest producer of Cuban bread, churning out some 18,000 loaves every day. Publix even carries their bread in many of their stores in the general Tampa region.

In 2018, the historic La Segunda Bakery & Café opened a second location on Kennedy Boulevard just west of Dale Mabry Highway. Hopefully, they will continue to open more locations throughout Florida (hint! hint!).

Did You Know? Four generations have followed the 4-Step Cuban bread baking process. Here are the steps:

Step 1

The ingredients are carefully mixed by veteran master bakers, some of whom have been part of the La Segunda family for more than 20 years.

Step 2

The dough is shaped into loaves, and workers place a fresh palmetto leaf across the top to hold the moisture in.

Step 3

The loaves are moved in front of high-powered fans for hardening the exterior thus producing a crusty outside and soft interior.

Step 4

Each loaf is individually hand-placed into the hearth and left to bake for 45 minutes at the Historic La Segunda Bakery.
