History of the Creamsicle
Did you know that the creamsicle was made in 1905 by 11-year-old Frank Epperson? He experimented with putting fruit juice around vanilla ice cream.
He called his creation the “epsicle” which later became known as a popsicle, creamsicle, and dreamsicle!
The original flavor was orange. Today you can find them in many flavors like blue raspberry, lime, grape, cherry, and blueberry.
Creamsicle is a brand name, but it has become so synonymous with this kind of ice cream that many call other versions a creamsicle.
The company also made the Fudgesicle and the Dreamsicle (which contain iced milk rather than ice cream).
Celebrate Creamsicle Day in Tampa Bay
In 2023, Mayor Jane Castor & the City of Tampa officially declared August 14 as Creamsicle Day in Tampa Bay.
A free Bucs Training Day is open to the public on August 14 (sorry, it sold out!), where limited edition creamsicle merchandise is available.
The celebration pays homage to the vintage creamsicle Tampa Bay Buc uniforms. The creamsicle uniforms are returning in October 2023 when the Bucs take on the Detroit Lions.
Events are happening throughout Tampa, with a special Creamsicle fireworks show at Armature Works in Tampa closing the day.
