    Brief History of Piggly Wiggly

The store was founded in 1916 by Clarence Saunders, with the first store in Memphis, Tennessee.

Before the store opened, customers could not shop for their own groceries; they would give a store clerk their shopping list, and the clerk would gather everything for them.

Saunders established the Piggly Wiggly Corporation and patented the self-service format. The patent allowed him to issue franchises to hundreds of grocery stores with little pigs as iconic mascots.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the store became one of the largest supermarket chains, with over 2,000 stores at its peak. The origins of the unusual name for the store have been a mystery ever since the first store opened.

    1. Thank you! My first job was at the Piggly Wiggly in Defuniak Springs. This article brings back great memories of that time. I live in Monticello now and unfortunately, our Piggly Wiggly is now a Bob and Jeff’s.
