Lynyrd Skynyrd is a rock band from Jacksonville recognized as one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” The group was initially formed in 1964 as a band called My Backyard and has undergone numerous lineup changes. They decided on the name Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969 and are known for their Southern rock sounds and iconic hits such as “Free Bird” and Sweet Home Alabama.”
The band released its first album in 1973 and has released fourteen albums to date, and they are currently working on their fifteenth.
Ronnie, Johnny, and Donnie Van Zant are brothers and musicians that grew up in a house in the Westside section of Jacksonville. Ronnie was one of the founding members of Lynyrd Skynryd, who passed away in a plane crash in 1977. Johnny is the current lead vocalist of the band, having joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987.
