Often thought of as a combination of tennis, table tennis, and badminton, pickleball is a fun, easy-to-learn sport no matter your skill level.

Bainbridge Island Pickleball

The sport originated in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was an improvised game created by three fathers who were trying to entertain their kids with the gear they had on hand: table tennis paddles, a wiffle ball, and a badminton net.

Since its early days, pickleball has become a popular sport in the United States.

It is especially popular in Florida, due to our warmer weather, which allows for year-round play on outdoor courts.

In the summer, pickleball is enjoyed in air-conditioned indoor courts.

Florida Pickleball courts

In fact, the Sunshine State currently has the most pickleball courts in the country – with over 1,000 courts to choose from.

We have put together a starter guide to playing pickleball in Florida. This includes all the basics you should know before getting started, as well as where to find some of our favorite pickleball courts in the state.

The Basics of Pickleball

How to Play

Pickleball can be played as a singles game (one-on-one) or a doubles game (two-on-two). The game is played on pickleball courts, which are similar to tennis courts

A method such as a coin toss can be used to determine who plays first.

Pickleball uses an underhand serve or a drop serve. The game has a two-bounce rule, meaning the initial serve and the return must bounce.

If the ball goes out of bounds or hits the net, it’s out. Points are only scored by the serving team. Once the server commits a fault, they lose the serve to the opposing team.

Most pickleball games are played until one person or team reaches 11 points and must win by 2 points.

Pickleball Gear

Before you play your first game of pickleball, make sure you have the right gear.

The essentials include the following:

  • Athletic clothing: Consider moisture-wicking shirts and tank tops, leggings, and running shorts that allow for comfortable stretching and movement.
  • Pickleball paddle: Pickleball paddles are often considered a mix between ping pong paddles and tennis rackets. They are essential for playing the game.
  • Court shoes: If you aren’t familiar with court sports, it may come as a surprise that running shoes are not recommended for playing a pickleball game. The best pickleball shoes are a comfortable pair of court shoes made for quick movements.
  • A pickleball: Similar to wiffle balls, pickleballs are durable, lightweight plastic balls used for this sport.
